Extendicare communities walk and roll in support of the Alzheimer Society of Canada
According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, 700,000 Canadians currently live with dementia. By 2050, this population will grow to nearly two million. Active in communities across Canada, the Alzheimer Society offers programs and support services for people living with dementia and their families, fundraises to advance research, advocates for policy change and increases public awareness.
Whether delivering long-term care in homes across the country or providing home health care to people in their own communities, Extendicare and ParaMed care professionals have a deep understanding of how Alzheimer’s disease and dementia affect a person’s thinking and memory, and how it impacts them and their loved ones,
With the impact of dementia close to our hearts, Extendicare continues to strengthen our partnership with the Alzheimer Society of Canada. Our teams are inspired to participate and walk in support of a cause that we profoundly care about.
On May 24, the Alzheimer Society of Canada’s IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s will be held nationwide to raise awareness and show support. Joining this effort, throughout the month of May, Extendicare long-term care homes, ParaMed home health care professionals, and leaders from SGP Purchasing Network are stepping up to include their communities in activities to show our support. Some will fundraise and join their local Alzheimer chapter in a community walk, host bake sales or plan for their own unique ways to include their residents and families.
Walking to raise awareness and support of Alzheimer’s and other dementias
Extendicare has been a proud supporter of the Alzheimer Society of Canada for over a decade. Our annual charity golf tournament has raised upwards of $1.7 million to support the Alzheimer Society’s critical work to improve quality of life, enhance community supports, and increased access to resources for Canadians affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, as well as their caregivers.
As Canada’s leading seniors’ care provider, we embrace every person for the individual they are, we care for each person as we would our own family, and we provide high-quality care to those we serve. Our teams across the county are excited to support this great cause by creating special events tailored to their communities’ needs.
At Extendicare McGarrell Place, in London, Ont., a home that operates a specialized Behavioural Support Transitional Unit to deliver high-quality person-centered dementia care, the team is partnering with local students, volunteers, team members, families and residents to spend the morning together strolling in the neighbourhood. An information station in the home offers education for all visitors on the work of the ASC and how to donate to McGarrell Place’s fundraising efforts.
At Extendicare Bonnyville in Bonnyville, Alta., residents, families, and team members will be taking a stroll around their local lake and holding a barbecue.
Across Manitoba, Extendicare long-term care homes will participate in a region-wide walk to bring together their community.
In North Bay, Ont., our ParaMed team will embark on a walk starting at the local waterfront, with each step making a difference in support of dementia care.
